UK role in US illegal rendition exposed by secret memo

The UK failed to track detainees handed over to the US, neglecting to protect them from possible torture in America's secret prisons. That's been revealed after an agreement between the two states on the treatment of terror-suspects captured in Iraq was declassified. 28-year-old Pakistani Yunus Rahmatullah is one of the victims of this deal. He was seized by British soldiers in Iraq in 2004 as a suspected insurgent and secretly sent to a US detention camp in Afghanistan, a process dubbed extraordinary rendition. The man's lawyers are calling on the UK to help free him as Britain was the detaining authority.

NATO aircraft has bombarded south-western parts of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, killing seven civilians, reports AFP, quoting Libyan state television.

­In addition, the Libyan state information agency Jana says NATO planes have also attacked the town of Bir al-Ghanam, to the south of Tripoli, killing four more civilians there.

NATO admits killing babies / civilians

NATO has admitted that civilians were killed in an air strike on a Tripoli suburb on Sunday. Gaddafi officials say two babies were among the nine dead. It's the first time the Alliance has conceded responsibility for civilian deaths, although Libya's Health Ministry claims more than 800 people have died in three months of air attacks. NATO has warned Libyan civilians to distance themselves from forces loyal to ruler Muammar Gaddafi to allow it to strike those forces with 'greater success and with minimum risk to civilians.'
On Wednesday, Libyan state media reported that seven people were killed in a NATO airstrike in the capital, Tripoli. The military alliance is facing mounting criticisms over the civilian losses in the North African nation. Press TV talks with Dr. Webster Griffin Tarpley, author and historian in Maryland, about the developing quagmire and conflict between the Western countries over crisis-hit Libya.





At least seven civilians in Libya have been killed by a NATO airstrike which hit a residential area overnight. Earlier, the Alliance confirmed it had mistakenly attacked rebel forces, but the number killed in that friendly-fire attack is not known. In the middle of the night, Tripoli's Souk al-Juma district was woken up by a blast, when a bomb, or several bombs, landed in this residential area. Several three-story buildings have been destroyed as a result. According to initial reports, four families -- 12 to 14 people -- resided there, and at least seven inhabitants have been killed, while some are still missing.

UN tried 'to help Tamil Tigers flee': report

NEW DELHI — The UN together with a Western government tried to save Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger leadership from a final offensive that eventually wiped them out, an Indian media report said Tuesday.

A surviving Tiger leader, Selvarasa Pathmanathan, formerly the chief arms smuggler for the rebels, told Indian website FirstPost that the world body was trying to arrange a ship for top figures to flee in May 2009.

Sri Lanka claimed an end to 37 years of ethnic bloodshed after killing the military leadership of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on the island's northeast coast in mid May 2009.

Pathmanathan, in the interview conducted earlier this month at an undisclosed location in Colombo, has said that the UN and an unnamed government wanted to send a ship for the trapped Tiger leadership to escape.

Asked to name the country involved, he said: "Actually, it was UN with another country. I don't like to mention the name of the country, but it's a Western country."

Pathmanathan, who is better known as KP, was appointed chief international representative of the Tigers by rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran shortly before
he was killed in the last days of the war.

Gaddafi gold-for-oil, dollar-doom plans behind Libya 'mission'?

More speculation has been raised on the reasons for NATO's intervention in Libya. As RT's Laura Emmett reports, the organisation may have been trying to prevent Gaddafi from burying the American buck.



NATO's bombing campaign in Libya has lasted for nearly two months now, but has failed to break the stalemate of the civil war. Geopolitical analyst Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya thinks the coalition has a vested interest in making the conflict last.




In an interview with John Baron, a British Member of Parliament and one of the few who voted against taking action in Libya, RT discussed the possibility of all-out war in this country.



Syrian troops, backed by tanks, have reportedly entered the costal town of Baniyas. It follows a day of nationwide protests across the country that left 30 people dead. The US is warning the regime that it will take new steps against it, in response to the latest bloody crackdown by security forces. Syrian officials blame armed terrorist groups for the unrest, while protesters say they want an end to decades of repression and corruption. It's now thought more than 580 people have been killed since the uprising began almost two months ago. With US sanctions already in place, and the threat of more to come, the EU has also agreed on an assets freeze and a travel ban for top Syrian officials. RT talks more on this with International Relations expert, Professor Mark Almond from Bilkent University in Turkey.
